Syria: Syria has placed 73 tonnes of natural uranium under the supervision and safeguards of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Foreign Minister Asaad Al Shaibani announced on Monday. This significant step indicates Syria's commitment to transparency and trust with the international community regarding its nuclear activities.
According to Qatar News Agency, Al Shaibani made the announcement during a speech at the IAEA General Conference in Vienna. He highlighted that this move represents a new phase of cooperation between Syria and the IAEA. The Foreign Minister emphasized that Syria had disclosed the presence of nuclear material at an undeclared site in July and had subsequently signed a memorandum of understanding and a roadmap with the IAEA focusing on peaceful nuclear activities.
The United States has expressed support for Syria's actions. US Energy Secretary Chris Wright acknowledged Damascus's efforts to provide complete and accurate reports to the IAEA, aligning with its safeguards agreement. This development is viewed as a positive step towards ensuring the peaceful use of nuclear materials in Syria.
