Washington: A delegation from Ukraine, headed by Rustem Umerov, the newly appointed Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, has departed for the United States to pursue further negotiations aimed at ending the war with Russia.
According to Qatar News Agency, Umerov was named to the post after the resignation of Andriy Yermak, who stepped down on November 28 following an anti-corruption raid of his residence by investigators. The visit to Washington follows high-level talks in Geneva last week, where Ukrainian and US officials discussed a peace-framework proposed by the United States.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the mission's goal is "to take the necessary steps to end the war quickly and effectively," aiming for a peace that "preserves dignity." Ukrainian officials are coordinating with the US on what Kyiv describes as the most constructive approach possible.
The delegation's upcoming talks are part of continued negotiations over a revised US peace plan. Earlier this month, the original 28-point draft, criticized by Kyiv and many European allies for appearing overly favorable to Russian demands, was reduced to 19 points. However, negotiations remain unresolved and no final agreement has been reached.
