UN Calls for Halting Clashes in Sweida, Preserving Peace, Stability in Syria

Doha: The United Nations has expressed deep concern over the violence and armed clashes in the Syrian province of Sweida, stressing the importance of peace and stability as a fundamental pillar for the country's recovery and reconstruction. Adam Abdelmoula, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Syria, stressed in a post on the X platform that Syrians are in dire need of stability, peace, and unity for recovery and reconstruction.

According to Qatar News Agency, Najat Rochdi, Deputy Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Syria, expressed her deep concern in a statement over reports of violence in Sweida that resulted in a large number of casualties, warning of the danger of the continuation of such incidents. She called on local authorities and relevant parties to take urgent measures to protect civilians, restore calm, and prevent incitement. She emphasized the importance of constructive dialogue and genuine inclusion to achieve a comprehensive political transition in Syria that respects sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity.

Over the past two days, the southern Syrian province of Sweida has witnessed clashes between local armed groups and clans in the Al-Maqous neighborhood of Sweida city. These clashes stemmed from accumulated tensions over the past period, resulting in the deaths of more than 30 people and approximately 100 wounded, according to a preliminary toll.

The Syrian Ministry of Defense announced earlier Monday that the army and internal security forces units had been deployed to the affected areas to break up the clashes, protect civilians, and restore stability. It noted that a number of army personnel were killed while attempting to stop the clashes after being attacked by outlaw groups.
