UN Human Rights Chief Urges Immediate Ceasefire in Sudan Amid Rising Civilian Casualties

Gaza: UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk has voiced concern over the increasing civilian casualties in Sudan, following reports of more than 50 civilian deaths across four states due to drone attacks. He is calling for an urgent end to the hostilities and a renewed commitment to dialogue aimed at achieving a ceasefire.

According to Qatar News Agency, Turk highlighted the severe impact on civilians resulting from the heightened use of drones in the ongoing conflict. He emphasized a troubling pattern of strikes on civilian targets and essential infrastructure, such as markets, healthcare facilities, and educational institutions.

The UN official reiterated the need for an immediate cessation of violence and urged all parties to fully engage in discussions to establish a ceasefire. He also called on states, especially those with significant influence, to take decisive actions to halt the transfer of arms that exacerbate the conflict and jeopardize civilian safety.

The conflict in Sudan, which erupted on April 15, 2023, involves confrontations between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces and is nearing its fourth year.
