The united nations: A committee comprising representatives from five international organizations, known as the Quintet, has conducted consultations with Sudanese political parties to support a comprehensive political process.
According to Qatar News Agency, the Quintet consists of the African Union, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the League of Arab States, the European Union, and the United Nations. These organizations are working together to facilitate dialogue and progress in Sudan's political landscape. Deputy Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, Farhan Haq, stated that the Quintet engaged with Sudanese civilian political leaders following initial consultations in Addis Ababa in June. The discussions focused on advancing the political process and establishing confidence-building measures.
UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy for Sudan, Pekka Haavisto, continues to engage with all parties involved, urging them to commit to de-escalation and genuine dialogue. Haavisto recently contacted Sudanese Foreign Minister Muhieddine Salem to discuss the latest developments and preparations for his upcoming visit to Khartoum.
In addition to engaging with government officials, the UN envoy is also in communication with RSF leader General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo to discuss practical measures to reduce tensions. Since April 2023, Sudan has experienced armed conflict between the army and the RSF, resulting in significant civilian casualties and displacement.
