Doha: HE Representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to the State of Qatar, Ahmed Lotfy Mohsen, emphasized the strategic partnership with Qatar as a pivotal pillar in addressing global humanitarian crises. According to Qatar News Agency, His Excellency highlighted that Qatar, through government bodies and charitable institutions, has significantly contributed financially to UNHCR efforts, with donations amounting to USD 440 million since 2010. These contributions have supported protection programs and provided essential assistance to forcibly displaced persons globally.
Qatar's support goes beyond financial aid, extending to logistical and in-kind assistance. This includes facilitating the transport of urgent relief supplies to crisis zones like Afghanistan and Lebanon and playing a diplomatic role in promoting stability and dialogue for voluntary return and local integration programs. The impact on the ground includes USD 40 million provided through the Qatar Fund for Development since 2019, allowing UNHCR to respond swiftly to emergencies and support underfunded operations, ensuring the continuity of vital services such as healthcare, education, and shelter.
Innovative financing tools and Islamic philanthropy are also part of Qatar's contributions, with total donations amounting to nearly USD 145 million since 2018. This includes a strategic agreement by Qatar Charity to contribute USD 10 million to the Global Islamic Fund for Refugees. HE Mohsen noted the importance of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, coinciding with the 75th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention, as a moment to reflect on international protection and reaffirm commitments to the rights of displaced persons.
He stressed the need for international solidarity and effective partnerships amid escalating global humanitarian challenges. The partnership between UNHCR and Qatar serves as a successful model of cooperation between governments and international organizations. Concluding his remarks, HE Mohsen expressed hope for continued collaboration with Qatar, founded on shared values, to sustain support and create a lasting positive impact on the lives of refugees and internally displaced persons worldwide.
