US Announces Extension of Ceasefire Agreement between Lebanon, Israeli Entity until Feb. 18

Doha: The White House announced Monday that "the arrangement between Lebanon and Israel, monitored by the United States, will continue to be in effect until February 18, 2025." The White House statement said that the governments of Lebanon, the Israeli entity, and the US "will also begin negotiations for the return of Lebanese prisoners captured after October 7, 2023." The ceasefire agreement that entered into force on Nov. 27, 2024, stipulates the withdrawal of the Israeli occupation from the Lebanese territories it occupied after 60 days from the entry into force of the agreement.

According to Qatar News Agency, the extension of the ceasefire aims to maintain stability in the region while facilitating diplomatic efforts for resolving outstanding issues between the parties involved. The negotiations for the return of Lebanese prisoners are expected to play a significant role in reducing tensions and fostering a peaceful environment conducive to further dialogue.

The ceasefire agreement, originally established to halt hostilities and promote peace, includes provisions for the withdrawal of military forces and the initiation of talks to address humanitarian concerns. The ongoing involvement of the United States as a monitor underscores the importance of international cooperation in managing the complex dynamics of the Middle East.
