US Commits Additional $2.5 Billion in Military Support to Ukraine

Washington: The United States has unveiled a substantial $2.5 billion military aid package for Ukraine, aimed at enhancing the nation’s defense capabilities amid ongoing tensions with Russia. This significant move comes less than a month before President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration.

According to Qatar News Agency, the newly announced aid package comprises two main components: $1.25 billion that allows the Pentagon to expedite the transfer of weapons from existing American stockpiles to Ukraine, and over $1.22 billion designated through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative for purchasing military equipment from defense industry partners.

The comprehensive military aid includes a variety of supplies such as drones, ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), anti-tank missiles, air-to-ground munitions, and spare parts. The US State Department’s statement highlighted these elements as vital to bolstering Ukraine’s defensive capabilities.

President Joe Biden underscored that this assistance package is part of a broader strategy to support Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia. The announcement comes on the heels of a previous pledge earlier this month, where the US committed $988 million in military assistance that included various weapons and military equipment.

This escalation of support underscores the United States’ ongoing commitment to Ukraine’s defense and security as geopolitical tensions in the region persist.
