Washington: The US military announced that a strike on a boat suspected of drug smuggling in the Caribbean Sea resulted in the deaths of four individuals. This operation is part of ongoing efforts by the Trump administration to combat alleged drug trafficking in the region.
According to Qatar News Agency, the US Southern Command revealed via a post on X that its Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere executed the strike on Tuesday. The boat was reportedly navigating established drug-trafficking routes, and intelligence had confirmed its involvement in drug trafficking activities. However, specific details regarding the identities of those killed or the exact location of the strike have not been disclosed by the command.
The operation has drawn criticism from several human rights organizations, including Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, as well as independent United Nations experts. These groups have raised concerns about the legality of the US strikes on suspected drug-smuggling vessels and the evidence provided to justify targeting these boats.
Initiated in September 2025, the campaign by the Trump administration aims to target vessels suspected of being involved in drug transportation. According to AP, the strike on Tuesday has increased the reported death toll from this initiative to at least 227 individuals across 68 separate strikes on boats.
