Washington: US President-elect Donald Trump discussed the issue of illegal immigration through Mexico in a phone call with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. According to Trump, the Mexican President “agreed to stop Migration through Mexico,” while Sheinbaum denied responsibility for immigration, stating that she had no intention of closing Mexico’s borders.
According to Qatar News Agency, Sheinbaum took to social media to clarify her stance, stating, “we reiterate that Mexico’s position is not to close borders but to build bridges between governments and between peoples.” She highlighted their discussion on migration and informed Trump that migrant caravans were not reaching the northern border with the United States. She also emphasized the need for enhanced cooperation on security issues.
Trump, on the other hand, described the conversation as “very productive” on his Truth Social account, asserting that “she has agreed to stop Migration through Mexico, and into the United States, effectively closing o
ur Southern Border.” This exchange comes after Sheinbaum’s previous warning of imposing tariffs on the United States, following Trump’s announcement of a 25% tariff on all products entering the country from Canada and Mexico.
