2026 World Cup: Spanish Coaching Continues its World Cup Presence through Qatar’s National Team

Doha: The Spanish coaching school continues its World Cup presence with Qatar, as Spanish coach Julen Lopetegui leads the Qatari national team in the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Lopetegui's appointment as head coach of the Qatari national team comes after his success in leading them to qualify for the World Cup through the Asian qualifiers for the first time in history. Qatar had previously only participated in the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 as the host nation. According to Qatar News Agency, this marks the second consecutive time that the Qatari national team has appeared in the World Cup under the leadership of a Spanish coach, following Felix Sanchez in the 2022 edition. Qatar's football success over the past decade can be closely linked to Spanish coaching. With it, they have achieved unprecedented historical milestones together, including winning the AFC Asian Cup and qualifying for the World Cup, reflecting the strong compatibility between the philosophy, trainin g methods, and tactical approaches of Spanish coaches and the abilities and technical skills of Qatari players. The Spanish coaching school emerged as a strategic choice adopted by Qatari football in building its sporting project, from the youth up to the senior national team. This strategy began with Spanish coach Felix Sanchez, who joined the Aspire Academy in 2006 from the renowned La Masia, FC Barcelona's youth academy. His role was to contribute to the development of Qatari talent within a long-term project aimed at building generations capable of competing regionally and globally. In 2013, Sanchez took over as coach of Qatar's U-19 national team, taking only a year to secure a victory in the 2014 AFC U-19 Championship, the first continental title in the history of this age group. Following this achievement, the Qatar Football Association continued to rely on the same vision. Sanchez oversaw the U-20 and U-23 national teams before being appointed head coach of the senior national team in 2017, leveragi ng his extensive knowledge of the generation he had developed over many years. The fruits of his labor were swift. In 2019, Sanchez led the Qatari national team to its first-ever AFC Asian Cup title, during the tournament held in the UAE, after an exceptional performance that captivated the entire continent. The Spanish coach's success didn't stop there. He continued his mission, guiding the team to its historic first-ever appearance at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, becoming the first coach to lead Al-Annabi in the World Cup. This was followed by a brief period under Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz, but Qatari football quickly returned to the Spanish school of coaching with the appointment of Bartolome Marquez Lopez before the start of the 2023 AFC Asian Cup, which Doha hosted. Lopez, in turn, wrote a new chapter in the success of the Spanish coaching school with Qatari football, leading Al-Annabi to retain the Asian Cup and win the continental title for the second consecutive time, an unprecedented achiev ement. In early May 2025, Julen Lopetegui was appointed coach of the Qatari national team, continuing the successful tradition of the Spanish school of football. In a short period, he added another achievement to Qatari football history by leading the team to qualify for the 2026 World Cup for the first time through the Asian qualifiers. The success of Spanish coaches with Qatari national teams confirms that it is not merely a coincidence, but rather the result of a comprehensive project based on a clear philosophy of player development and the creation of a consistent playing style for the national teams. The Spanish approach, based on teamwork, ball possession, attention to technical and tactical aspects, and the development of individual skills, found the ideal environment for growth and development within the Qatari football system. With the 2026 World Cup fast approaching, Qatari fans are looking forward to the continuation of this successful partnership with the Spanish school of football, hoping for a distinguished performance under Julen Lopetegui's leadership that reflects the progress Qatari football has made and strengthens its position on the world stage. The Qatari national team is in Group B alongside Switzerland, Canada, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. It will begin its journey by facing Switzerland on June 13 in San Francisco, then move to Vancouver to meet its Canadian counterpart on June 18, and conclude the first round matches by facing Bosnia and Herzegovina in Seattle on June 24.
