British Prime Minister Conducts Large-Scale Government Reshuffle Following Deputy’s Resignation

London: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer conducted a large-scale government reshuffle Friday, following the resignation of his deputy, Angela Rayner, after admitting she underpaid property tax on a new home.

According to Qatar News Agency, the Prime Minister's Office announced in a statement that Starmer appointed Yvette Cooper as Foreign Secretary, replacing David Lammy, who will assume the positions of Deputy Prime Minister and Secretary of Justice. Shabana Mahmood, currently Secretary of Justice, will be appointed Home Secretary, responsible for tackling illegal immigration.

New secretaries were also appointed to several portfolios, including Environment, Business, Housing, and Work and Pensions. This comes amid reports of the dismissal of the Speaker of the House of Commons and the Prime Minister's search for a successor.

Meanwhile, Secretary of State for Scotland Ian Murray announced his departure from the government in a statement on the X platform.

The Labour Party secured a landslide victory in the July 2024 elections, forming a government that Britons hoped would help them change and improve their lives. However, since then, the populist British Reform Party, led by Nigel Farage, has held a lead over Labour in opinion polls.
