China Launches Mammoth Observatory to Probe Origin of Universe

Doha: China has launched the world's largest underground neutrino observatory in Guangdong Province, southern China, with the participation of 700 researchers from 74 institutions across 17 countries.

According to Qatar News Agency, the launch was successful, with the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory commencing operations to help address questions on the nature of matter and the origin of the universe, China Central Television (CCTV) reported.

The observatory is located 700 meters underground in Jiangmen City. It is capable of detecting neutrinos from multiple sources, including the sun, supernovae, the Earth's atmosphere, as well as the Taishan and Yangjiang nuclear power plants, situated 53 kilometers away.

After more than a decade of preparation and construction, the observatory has become the world's first large-scale, high-precision facility specifically dedicated to studying neutrinos.
