Experts Call on UN General Assembly to Hold Emergency Meeting to Support Gaza

Doha: UN experts called Friday for an urgent emergency meeting of the UN General Assembly to consider means to stop the genocide being committed by the Israeli occupation forces against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and to support the population.

According to Qatar News Agency, in a joint statement, the experts called on the international community to take urgent action before the start of the UN General Assembly to demand an end to the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories in light of the ongoing genocide and famine in Gaza.

They stressed that silence and inaction are not an option in the face of mass atrocities, and that "Israel must immediately end its obstruction of safe, effective, and dignified humanitarian assistance."

They considered that "lifting these restrictions alone will not be enough to save the afflicted people of Gaza. What is urgently required is to end the Israeli blockade and declare an immediate ceasefire."

They emphasized the world's need at this critical moment for the General Assembly, as the highest body in the United Nations, to assume decisive leadership and act to prevent another catastrophe, especially as the entire people of Gaza face the threat of famine under siege as the Israeli army advances toward Gaza City, which is crowded with more than one million displaced people.

The humanitarian emergency has reached unbearable proportions.

They called for holding the Israeli occupation accountable and not giving it further excuses to evade accountability.

They pointed to the killing of more than two thousand Palestinians at aid distribution sites in recent months, 70% of them in areas known as the "Gaza Humanitarian Foundation," in addition to the forced disappearance of many civilians from distribution sites.

The experts also called on the General Assembly to convene an emergency meeting to call on Member States to work under the banner of "Uniting for Peace," in line with its resolution 377, and to recommend a peace process.

They called for the unfettered opening of all crossings for humanitarian aid into Gaza under direct UN supervision, and for the immediate suspension of failed and dangerous mechanisms, including those that have led to widespread killings at aid distribution points.

They urged Member States with ports in the Mediterranean to urgently deploy emergency naval vessels carrying humanitarian aid.

They also called for the mandate of UN-led international humanitarian convoys, with full authority to coordinate and supervise all crossings into the Strip, an immediate and lasting ceasefire, and the release of Palestinian prisoners and hostages.

The experts stressed the need for the General Assembly to uphold the UN's obligation to respect international humanitarian law, protect civilians, and ensure that life-saving aid reaches the population of Gaza without hindrance or delay.

They considered that "anything less makes the international community complicit in these grave violations."
