French Prime Minister Survives No-Confidence Vote

Paris: French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou on Thursday survived a vote of no confidence in the lower house of parliament, after the motion, brought by the leftist opposition, failed to gain traction with the far right. The motion for a no-confidence vote against Bayrou's government was approved by 131 deputies, which is quite a long way from the 288 deputies needed to bring down a cabinet.

According to Qatar News Agency, the vote took place a day after Bayrou presented his cabinet's program on Tuesday in the lower house of parliament - the National Assembly, and yesterday he presented it in the upper house - the Senate. In his keynote speech to both chambers of parliament, Bayrou promised to review the pension reform and to reject the cuts of 4,000 jobs in the national education system.
