Qatar Accedes to Nice Agreement for Trademark Classification

Geneva: The State of Qatar has officially deposited its instrument of accession to the Nice Agreement Concerning the International Classification of Goods and Services for the Purposes of the Registration of Marks. This significant development was marked by a meeting between HE Director General of WIPO Daren Tang and HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva Dr. Hind bint Abdulrahman Al Muftah at the WIPO headquarters in Geneva.

According to Qatar News Agency, the Nice Agreement serves as an important international framework for classifying goods and services in the context of international trademark registration. Member states of the Agreement are obligated to apply the Nice Classification as part of their trademark registration processes, ensuring its inclusion in official documents and publications related to trademark registration in compliance with the Agreement's provisions.

The Nice Classification itself is derived from the classification published by the International Bureau of Intellectual Property in 1971, as outlined in the Convention Establishing the World Intellectual Property Organization. The Agreement is accessible to states that are parties to the 1883 Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property, which includes Qatar.

Under the amended text of the Nice Agreement, a nation's accession becomes effective three months following the notification of accession to the Director General of the Organization, unless an alternative date is mutually agreed upon.
