Doha: Qatar and Canada have reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing bilateral relations, with recent discussions between HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani and HE Prime Minister of Canada Dr. Mark Carney highlighting the ongoing cooperation in economic, trade, and investment sectors.
According to Qatar News Agency, the talks underscored Qatar's position as Canada's third-largest trading partner in the Gulf region and eleventh-largest in the Arab world.
Al-Watan newspaper reported that both nations have established a joint committee to facilitate continuous economic dialogue, along with a Qatari-Canadian Business Council to explore investment opportunities and bolster trade. Focus areas include artificial intelligence, clean energy, infrastructure, agri-food industries, and aviation. Investment ties were further strengthened by Qatar Investment Authority's acquisition of a 4% stake in Canadian firm Ivanhoe Mines and QatarEnergy's agreements with ExxonMobil for LNG exploration in Newfoundland and Labrador.
In security cooperation, Al-Arab newspaper highlighted a letter of intent between Qatar's Security Committee and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, marking a significant milestone in security diplomacy. This partnership, aimed at enhancing security measures for major sporting events, builds on Qatar's successful hosting of the 2022 FIFA World Cup and extends its expertise for the 2026 tournament. The collaboration emphasizes strategic planning and multicultural engagement, setting a foundation for long-term security relations.
Meanwhile, The Peninsula newspaper focused on Qatar's Community Responsibility Private Schools and Kindergartens Project, which has expanded to offer over 4,000 free and discounted educational seats across 46 institutions. This initiative reflects Qatar's commitment to educational equity and social responsibility, doubling the number of participating schools since December and highlighting the nation's dedication to supporting deserving families through education.
