The State of Qatar reiterated the continuation of partnership with the United Nations system to achieve its goals, pointing out that it is one of the leading countries in providing development and relief assistance, expressing its keenness to adhere to the principles of shared responsibility and multilateral action.
This was reflected in the statement delivered by HE Sheikh Abdulrahman bin Abdulaziz Al-Thani, Third Secretary of the Permanent Delegation of the State of Qatar to the United Nations, at the session of the United Nations General Assembly on the item “Strengthening the coordination of humanitarian and disaster relief assistance provided by the United Nations, including special economic assistance.”
The statement affirmed the State of Qatar’s keenness to provide humanitarian and development support to the Palestinian people, in line with the policy of the State of Qatar to mitigate the effects of humanitarian crises. Noting the grant presented under the guidance of His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Amir of the State, “may God protect him”, in May 2021 amounted to $500 million in support of Gaza Strip reconstruction.
The statement referred to the statement of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, which praised the support of efforts made with generous assistance by the State of Qatar, which allowed the continuation of fuel supplies to Gaza power plant, as well as heeding projects and financial assistance.
The statement also referred to the agreement signed last November by Qatar Development Fund with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, (UNRWA), regarding a contribution agreement to support UNRWA’s core resources for the period 2021-2022, amounting to US $18 million. That is to additional comprehensive support to Palestine refugees in Syria in the health, education and economic development sectors, totaling US $7 million.
The statement mentioned that the State of Qatar will spare no effort to provide the necessary assistance to many countries and international organizations to address the Corona virus pandemic. Noting that contributions made in this regard exceed 140 million US dollars.
In this context, the statement referred to Qatar Fund for Development, which signed on the 20th. of last November a partnership agreement with the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI), for the period 2021-2025, by making a contribution of $10 million to support the coalition’s efforts to achieve equitable and sustainable vaccine access by low-income countries.
The statement mentioned that the State of Qatar had signed a basic contribution agreement with the World Health Organization (WHO) totaling US $10 million in support of the Organization’s Thirteenth General Program of Action, and the Initiative on accelerating the availability of tools to combat the corona virus in most needy countries. This step comes in recognition of the important role being played by World Health Organization (WHO).
In its statement, the State of Qatar indicated that it is among the countries supporting the United Nations in various fields, and that it continues to implement its commitments in this field.
The statement added that during 2020, the total funding committed by the Qatar Fund for Development exceeded $533 million, by allocating funding to many partners in the field of development and humanitarian aid, including the United Nations agencies.
The statement indicated that, Qatar Fund for Development signed last November an agreement with the World Food Program to provide a financial contribution of $90 million to help meet urgent food security needs in Yemen, given the importance of concerted efforts to meet food security needs in Yemen.
The statement continued, “Recognizing the important role of the Central Emergency Response Fund in the urgent response to the most urgent needs, the State of Qatar has provided more than $17 million to date for the Central Emergency Response Fund. Work is also underway for signing an agreement to provide a financial contribution to the Fund totaling $2 million. US dollars, for the period 2021-2022.
At the conclusion of its statement, the State of Qatar reiterated its continuation of enhancing partnership with the United Nations system as well as its active and positive contributions with a view to achieving the desired goals.
