Qatar Highlights Urgent Need to Protect Children’s Educational Rights Amid Conflict

New york: The State of Qatar emphasized the importance of promoting and protecting children's right to education, particularly in countries affected by conflict, highlighting its leading efforts in this field, which have received international recognition. This was articulated in a statement by HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations, Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, during the UN Security Council's open debate on effective strategies to end and prevent grave violations against children in armed conflict, held at UN headquarters in New York.

According to Qatar News Agency, Her Excellency detailed Qatar's key partnerships with the United Nations, reflecting the country's commitment to supporting international efforts to protect children affected by armed conflicts. She noted Qatar's hosting and support of the Analysis and Outreach Hub of the Office of the Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict, underscoring the center's vital role in advancing child protection efforts in conflict areas.

Her Excellency also marked the 20th anniversary of Security Council Resolution 1612 (2005), a landmark step that created a monitoring and reporting mechanism focused on children and armed conflict. She stressed the importance of translating commitments into concrete actions.

Expressing deep concern over the increasing number of grave violations against children, Her Excellency cited the UN Secretary-General's report highlighting the peak of violence against children in armed conflict in 2024. She condemned the grave violations of international humanitarian law by the Israeli occupation against children in the Gaza Strip and urged the international community to compel Israel to comply with international laws and address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Emphasizing the alarming scale of grave violations against children in the occupied Palestinian territories, Her Excellency highlighted the use of explosive weapons in populated areas and the escalation of violence in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem. She underscored the necessity of ensuring children's protection in conflict zones.
