Doha: The State of Qatar has affirmed that the right to development is a fundamental human right, noting that its recognition was enshrined in the adoption of the Declaration on the Right to Development in 1986.
According to Qatar News Agency, forty years after the declaration was adopted, Qatar said, its principles and standards continue to serve as a cornerstone for addressing many of the challenges facing the world today. This statement was delivered by Deputy Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Office in Geneva, Abdulrahman Mohammed Fakhroo, during a panel discussion on the right to development. The event was held to mark the 40th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration on the Right to Development, under agenda item 3 of the 63rd session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva.
He highlighted that promoting the right to development should remain an international and national priority within the framework of implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Qatar emphasizes the importance of implementing the development agenda in accordance with the provisions of the declaration and States' obligations under international human rights instruments.
Qatar has adopted an ambitious national vision for comprehensive development, known as Qatar National Vision 2030, and has actively worked to implement it through national development strategies. These efforts have resulted in significant national achievements and steady progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals, while maintaining Qatar's leading position in various international and regional development indicators.
At the international level, Qatar has pursued a foreign policy focused on strengthening and advancing international cooperation and solidarity, contributing to efforts to promote development across different fields. Qatar hosted the Fifth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC5) in March 2023 and is set to host the Second World Summit for Social Development in November 2025.
The Deputy Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations Office in Geneva emphasized Qatar's ongoing efforts through interactive solidarity, demonstrated by its provision of support to countries affected by disasters, conflicts, and climate change. He also highlighted Qatar's preventive solidarity efforts, such as investing in quality education and implementing a range of development programs and initiatives with international partners.
