Romania: Romania's President Klaus Iohannis announced his resignation Monday from his office, with the aim of ending a political crisis that began after the Constitutional Court annulled the results of the first round of the presidential elections, which took place on November 24, 2024.
According to Qatar News Agency, Iohannis stated: "To avoid a crisis in Romania and for the citizens, I resign from the presidency and leave it on February 12." He added that the presidential elections will be held again on May 4.
According to the Romanian constitution, Ilie Bologan, the current Speaker of the Senate, will assume the position of interim president of the country until a new president is elected.
The first round of the Romanian presidential elections is scheduled to take place on May 4, and the second round on the 18th of the same month.
