Seoul: South Korean President Lee Jae Myung reaffirmed on Friday that his country respects North Korea's political system, pledging to restore the 2018 inter-Korean military agreement aimed at reducing tensions on the Korean Peninsula. In a speech marking the 80th anniversary of Korea's liberation from Japanese colonial rule -- known as National Liberation Day -- Lee stressed that Seoul has no intention of engaging in hostile actions against Pyongyang.
According to Qatar News Agency, the president also outlined his vision for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, emphasizing that achieving this goal is essential for establishing lasting peace in the region. Lee's remarks came a day after Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, dismissed Seoul's reconciliation initiative as a "pipedream."
Since taking office in June, Lee has taken several steps to ease tensions, including halting propaganda broadcasts along the border and urging activists to stop sending balloons carrying leaflets into North Korea.
