Shura Council Focuses on Investment and Agricultural Support During Stated Meeting

Doha: The Shura Council convened its stated meeting on Monday at Tamim bin Hamad Hall, chaired by HE the Speaker Hassan bin Abdullah Al Ghanim. HE Secretary-General of the Shura Council Nayef bin Mohammed Al Mahmoud read out the agenda, and accordingly, the legislature endorsed the minute of the previous meeting.

According to Qatar News Agency, the legislature weighed in on the report of the Economic and Financial Affairs Committee concerning the public discussion request on mechanisms to bolster both national and foreign investment. Upon reviewing the report, HE Al Ghanim highlighted Qatar's progress in enhancing its investment climate and emphasized the need for advancing statutory legislation and policies to strengthen the nation as a global investment hub.

HE Vice-Chairman of the Economic and Financial Affairs Committee Essa bin Ahmad Al Nassr discussed the outcomes of the committee's meetings and its recommendations, which included accelerating procedures, fostering transparency, and optimizing legislative infrastructure to attract investments. The legislature decided to submit a non-binding proposal to the government, suggesting measures such as reassessing fees, modernizing investment legislation, and expanding support for local products.

The council also deliberated on a report from the Health, General Services, and Environment Committee regarding agricultural support for local farms and their role in food security. HE Al Ghanim stated the importance of advancing agricultural support policies to achieve self-sufficiency and dismantle barriers to competitiveness. HE Chairman Mubarak bin Mohammed Al Kuwari reviewed the report's outcomes and proposals, which included enacting clear legislation to support domestic production and reducing electricity bills for farms.

The legislature resolved to forward a non-binding proposal to the government, suggesting measures such as enacting supportive legislation, offering specialized advisory services, and establishing pricing mechanisms for agricultural products. The proposal also addressed oversight of imported goods and promoting agro-industrial manufacturing.

Additionally, the legislature examined draft legislation on biometric and genetic fingerprinting, referring them to the Internal and External Affairs Committee for further review. Reports on the participation of its delegation in international meetings, including the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean in Rome and the Arab Parliament session in Baghdad, were also reviewed.
