South Korea, US Form Joint Panel on Peaceful Nuclear Fuel Cooperation

Seoul: South Korea has announced the creation of a joint working group with the United States on uranium enrichment and spent fuel reprocessing for peaceful purposes. The initiative marks a significant step in the collaboration between the two nations in the nuclear energy sector.

According to Qatar News Agency, the move follows US approval for Seoul to pursue low-enriched uranium production and fuel reprocessing. This development came after a summit between South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and US President Donald Trump in October. The formation of the joint panel is part of a broader agreement reached in November, which also includes provisions for nuclear energy and US tariff reductions.

Seoul is keen to revise its bilateral nuclear accord with the United States to secure permanent pre-approval for enrichment and reprocessing activities. This revision aims to ensure stable fuel supplies for South Korea's commercial nuclear power plants, underscoring the nation's commitment to advancing its nuclear capabilities for peaceful purposes.
