Katara: Katara Art Center, located in the Katara Cultural Village, is currently hosting three art exhibitions with distinct themes from various art schools. These exhibitions opened on Tuesday, in alignment with Qatar's hosting of Art Basel Qatar, which is set to commence on February 5.
According to Qatar News Agency, the exhibitions celebrate creative voices rooted in Qatar and the region. They feature unique artistic practices from Qatari artist Asma Sami, in collaboration with Al Markhiya Gallery, Qatari artist Khalid Boumatar, in collaboration with Dar Hessa Art Gallery, and Iranian artist Haifa Alizadeh, in collaboration with Sana Art Gallery. The exhibitions highlight diverse approaches to contemporary art, spanning conceptual explorations, human narratives, visual expression, and cross-cultural dialogue.
Founder of Dar Hessa Art Gallery, artist Hanadi Al Darwish, expressed to Qatar News Agency her pride in supporting local artists like Khalid Boumatar. She emphasized the gallery's role in enriching the cultural and artistic scene by providing platforms for artists to develop their projects and express their visions.
Artist Khalid Boumatar, speaking to Qatar News Agency, shared that his exhibition includes 25 artworks focusing on Qatari heritage. He noted that his work transcends traditional portraiture by giving faces an inner voice, revealing insights about the person depicted and potentially the viewer.
Meanwhile, Qatari artist Asma Sami's exhibition presents a new collection of her works, establishing her as a significant artistic voice in Qatar's contemporary art scene.
The exhibitions, open to visitors until February 28, create a dynamic cultural dialogue reflecting Qatar's evolving art scene. This scene, deeply rooted in its local context yet globally engaged, underscores the significance of local narratives in the global art discourse amid the artistic atmosphere surrounding Art Basel Qatar.
