UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called today for an end to the war in the Gaza Strip, Lebanon, Sudan and Ukraine, stressing the world's need for peace. In a speech before the BRICS summit held in the Russian city of Kazan, Guterres called on the BRICS leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, to engage in efforts to bring peace to all regions. Peace is needed everywhere, in Ukraine, Gaza, Lebanon and Sudan. A just peace that is consistent with the UN Charter, international law and UN General Assembly resolutions, he said. Guterres stressed the need to respect the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of all countries, noting the urgent need to stop the Russian-Ukrainian war due to its negative repercussions at various levels in various regions of the world. Guterres had previously criticized the Russian military operation in Ukrainian territory, and Moscow's annexation of Ukrainian territory, calling for resolving the crisis between the two countries through dialogue and diplomatic means, away from the war machine.
