Baghdad: Special Representative of the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General for Iraq and Head of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) Mohammed bin Awad Al Hassan affirmed that the parliamentary elections in Iraq represent a milestone in the path toward consolidating democracy and political engagement in the country. Holding these elections within the specified time is clear evidence of the Iraqis' determination to uphold the option of the peaceful circulation of power and resort to ballot boxes as a legitimate vehicle to express the popular will, Al Hassan said in press remarks.
