United Nations Official Highlights Qatar’s Key Role in Peacebuilding and Anti-Corruption Efforts

Doha: HE Alexandre Zouev, Acting Under-Secretary-General for Counter-Terrorism and Assistant Secretary-General for Rule of Law and Security Institutions at the United Nations, has commended Qatar's significant contributions in mediation, peacebuilding, anti-corruption, and counter-terrorism under the leadership of HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani.

According to Qatar News Agency, Zouev emphasized the close cooperation between the United Nations and the State of Qatar in these critical areas. He highlighted Qatar's commitment to strengthening police institutions, both within peacekeeping operations and through national capacity building. Zouev praised the "His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani International Anti-Corruption Excellence Award," which underscores Qatar's dedication to combating corruption.

Zouev expressed appreciation for Qatar's positive contributions to anti-corruption efforts, noting the global significance of the award and its alignment with the United Nations' goals. He underscored the importance of Qatar's partnerships in the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Center as a key regional player.

The UN official also highlighted Qatar's role in hosting international forums and training programs for law enforcement, emphasizing events like the Doha Global Security Forum. He mentioned the Secretary-General's condemnation of the strikes on Doha and expressed solidarity with Qatar, acknowledging the country's peaceful nature.

Zouev lauded Qatar's mediation efforts in regional conflicts, including the Gaza Strip and Afghanistan, and hoped for continued joint efforts with the United States and Egypt. He discussed Qatar's financial contributions to the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) and potential collaboration in capacity-building for law enforcement in conflict zones.

He noted the upcoming High-Level International Conference on the Repatriation of Persons from Al-Hol, organized by Iraq with UNOCT's support, and stressed the need for international cooperation in reintegration efforts. Zouev highlighted Qatar's diplomatic influence in the Middle East as crucial in these initiatives.

Zouev outlined UNOCT's priorities, including strategic leadership, capacity building, and counter-terrorism coordination. He emphasized the importance of international cooperation and praised Qatar's support in organizing regional conferences and leveraging the UN's convening power.

Finally, Zouev discussed the Department of Peace Operations' focus on protecting civilians in conflict zones and strengthening national institutions in post-conflict societies. He acknowledged the challenges facing UN peacekeeping missions, particularly funding reductions, and praised Qatar's strong support in maintaining operations.
