Berlin: The German Football Association announced today that it has terminated the contract of national team head coach Julian Nagelsmann following Germany's early exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is being held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
According to Qatar News Agency, the association stated on its official website that it had reached an agreement to end the contract of the 38-year-old coach after discussions with senior football officials in the country. The decision comes after Germany's disappointing performance in the tournament.
The statement further revealed that Nagelsmann agreed to terminate his contract, which had been due to run until the summer of 2028. It also mentioned that the association would begin negotiations with Jurgen Klopp, who has shown a preliminary willingness to assume the role of head coach.
Nagelsmann is now only the second head coach in the history of the Germany national football team to be dismissed, following his predecessor Hansi Flick, whose tenure ended in 2023. This marks a significant moment in German football history, highlighting the pressure and expectations placed on the national team's leadership.
Germany was eliminated from the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the Round of 32 after losing to the Paraguay national football team 4-3 in a penalty shootout, following a 1-1 draw after regulation and extra time. This unexpected exit has prompted the German Football Association to seek new leadership to revitalize the team ahead of future competitions.
