YouTube Expands In-App Messaging Feature for Video Sharing

Doha: After testing got underway last year, YouTube is now more widely rolling out a new in-app messaging system. The aim is to let people connect over their favorite videos directly on YouTube.

According to Qatar News Agency, once available, the top-right corner of the YouTube app will show a new messaging icon. This system lets users share videos, Shorts, or livestreams and have 1:1 conversations. A unique aspect of this feature is that you can only communicate with someone after inviting them using a URL. This invite link, which is valid for seven days, must be sent using a third-party chat platform. It is designed for conversations with friends and family, rather than the broader YouTube audience.

After the recipient clicks the invite link, they have to 'allow messaging' or select 'not now.' This makes YouTube's messaging feature focused on video sharing. Additionally, unlisted video links can be shared, but private ones cannot. Messaging on YouTube is available only for users aged 18 and older, with Community Guidelines applied to all shared content and messages. Users can unsend messages and block users from messaging them again, as well as report conversations. Apart from the invite system, this is a straightforward chat capability. When watching a video, opening the Share menu will display available contacts. The YouTube app will also send notifications when new messages are received.

YouTube started testing this capability in November across Europe. Messaging is now rolling out to YouTube users in the US, UK, Brazil, and Singapore.
