Al-Raqim’s Summer Workshops Introduce Students to Arabic Calligraphy

Doha: The Qatar International Arabic Calligraphy Competition Committee (Al-Raqim), in collaboration with the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs and the Museum of Islamic Art, has successfully organized two training workshops aimed at introducing 70 students to the art of Arabic calligraphy. These workshops were held in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education's School Programs and Activities Division under the Schools and Student Affairs Department, as part of an initiative to promote Islamic identity and enhance appreciation for the Arabic language among young people.

According to Qatar News Agency, the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs shared that the workshops, which were a segment of the centers' summer programs, engaged students from Omar bin Al Khattab Secondary School and Al Wakra Secondary School. The primary objective was to acquaint them with Arabic calligraphy, nurture their artistic capabilities, and refine their calligraphic skills.

The program included a visual presentation detailing the history and evolution of Arabic calligraphy, followed by practical training where students practiced writing the phrase 'Qatar Will Remain Free' using the Ruq'ah script. This exercise focused on enhancing the visual balance and aesthetic harmony of the letters.

The organizing committee emphasized that this initiative is in line with the educational goals of the Al-Raqim competition. It seeks to revive the art of Arabic calligraphy, fortify the connection between younger generations and the nation's visual and historical identity, and highlight its profound connection with the Holy Quran and the artistic adornment of its manuscripts over the centuries.

Students who participated expressed their excitement and appreciation for the opportunity, which allowed them to explore their calligraphic talents, appreciate artistic expression, and deepen their cultural identity.
