ICESCO and Saudi Ministry of Culture Collaborate on Arabic Calligraphy Dictionary Project

Rabat: Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) and the Saudi Ministry of Culture discussed on Wednesday the progress of their joint project, The Illustrated Dictionary of the History of Arabic Calligraphy.

According to Qatar News Agency, the discussions centered around the development of a scholarly framework for documenting the most prominent sources of Arabic calligraphy in the Islamic world. This includes manuscripts, inscriptions, artworks, and other materials, with the aim of presenting this cultural heritage in a rigorous academic format that highlights its evolution and distinctive characteristics. Additionally, the two sides considered organizing an academic workshop at ICESCO headquarters in Rabat, which would bring together researchers, experts, and specialists in Arabic calligraphy.

Director-General of ICESCO, Dr. Salim bin Mohammed Al Malik, emphasized that the project aims to consolidate the authenticity of Arabic calligraphy and highlight its uniqueness and independence within its cultural context. He noted that it represents one of the most important reference projects in the Islamic world and will contribute to preserving and documenting the art form through a three-volume illustrated scholarly dictionary.

Dr. Al Malik further explained that ICESCO continues to work on the project in close coordination with its partners, with current efforts including the preparation of a project guide and drafting the titles of the three volumes.
