Washington: US President Donald Trump announced that Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to cease their border clashes, effective immediately, following a phone call with officials from both countries.
According to Qatar News Agency, the US president shared on the Truth Social platform that he had a "great" call with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manh regarding the resumption of their long-standing war, which he described as very unfortunate. He added that both sides agreed to a complete ceasefire starting tonight and to return to the original peace agreement.
For his part, the Thai Prime Minister revealed that he informed Trump in a phone call today that Cambodia is to blame for the renewed border clashes, as Bangkok has not shown any intention of halting hostilities.
Thailand and Cambodia have been disputing sovereignty over areas along their 817-kilometer land border for more than a century, and armed clashes have erupted between the two countries intermittently, the most intense being a week-long exchange of artillery fire in 2011.
Tensions escalated last May following the death of a Cambodian soldier during a skirmish, prompting both countries to significantly reinforce their border troops. Diplomatic efforts ultimately led to armed clashes.
