Doha: Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud called for an immediate and permanent ceasefire and the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, reaffirming his commitment to the two-state solution as the only path to achieving just and lasting peace in the Middle East.
According to Qatar News Agency, in his address to the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), the Somali President stated that the world is witnessing negative competition, widespread uncertainty, and an increased use of force to resolve conflicts, warning that this trajectory is dark and dangerous and threatens international norms and order.
He expressed deep concern over the ongoing suffering of the Palestinian people, stating that the violence, displacement, and deprivation faced by the inhabitants of the occupied Palestinian territories, including Gaza, calls upon shared conscience for urgent action.
Mohamud also emphasized the importance of focusing on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, noting the growing number of vulnerable countries and populations living in extreme poverty.
He pointed out that more than 30 UN member states, including Somalia, are classified as vulnerable and conflict-affected, adding that climate-related vulnerabilities are expected to dramatically increase this number.
He underscored that genuine progress and prosperity for all, as outlined in the Sustainable Development Goals, requires intensified efforts to promote multilateralism, solidarity, and collective action in service of all peoples and the planet.
